The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Denton Regional

Cancer is personal. Statistics show that we, or someone close to us, will face it in our lifetime. Cancer will touch the lives of thousands in our area this year, perhaps someone you love. Perhaps even you.

At The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Denton Regional, we take cancer personally, too. We always keep in mind that we are caring for people, not just a disease. People with feelings, hopes and fears. People with families, careers and plans for the future. Real people whose lives have been interrupted by cancer.

Dr. Gus Gonzalez is board certified in the practice of medical oncology, and hematology. He and his staff share a commitment to compassionate cancer care, with respect for the concerns of patients and their families.

Medical Oncology

Medical oncology is the area of medicine dedicated to treating cancer patients with drugs taken by mouth, injection, or intravenously. Physicians who specialize in this area are known as medical oncologists. Training for this specialty includes a degree from medical school and three years of residency focusing on internal medicine. During this time, learning takes place in a hospital with a department dedicated to cancer patients, under the supervision of an experienced physician. Next is a two or three year fellowship program specifically in medical oncology. Some medical oncologists have additional training in specialty areas of cancer such as leukemia, orthopedic, or gynecology.

Dr. Gonzales believes the patient and the family of the patient are his first concern. Medical options are presented in terms that should be easily understood, with the patient making treatment decisions after the options are weighed. Other members of your treatment team. may include a radiation oncologist, dietician, or social services professional.
